History of Summit Holiness Church
In th
e winter of 1970, Bro. Wille Ray Gentry became the pastor of a holiness church located on the south side of Montgomery, Al. He and his wife, Sis Vada Ball Gentry, put their hearts into this ministry. The church was in a small store front building, with low ceilings and theatre seating. Realizing the congregation needed a better facility, a search began.
In the summer of 1973, a old Primitive Baptist Church was located in the residental community of Highland Gardens, on the north side of Montgomery. Slowly the church began to increase in number. Several were saved, and the Holy Ghost blessed in many services. The church only had the sanctuary, so an addition for Sunday School rooms began. The community was not thrilled with a holiness church, and a court battle to stop the addition began. But God was victorious, and the church added on the rooms.
As time passed, the church realized a new location was needed. Parking was very limited, and the Sunday School rooms were now too small for the growing congregation. A search began, and in the Spring of 1987, Lord blessed us with a wonderful location. Located between the cities of Prattville and Millbrook, {less than 2 miles from I65 (@ ex.181)} on Hwy 14, the church is in a great location.
By the Spring of 1988, we held our 1st service in the new church. Through the years, God has truly blessed our church. Labor Day Weekend of 1988, became the first Annual Fellowship Meeting our church held, and each year God has truly blessed us. Many special services have been held through the years, but one that stands out is New Year's Eve 1988, when Sis Vada saw her 75 year old father pray through to the Holy Ghost.
As time goes by, changes come. In January 1995, our Pastor, Willie Ray Gentry, was diagnosed with brain cancer. By the end of March, he was in the presence of the LORD. His son, Steve Gentry, became our pastor. The LORD truly blessed and helped our entire church.
During the 8 years Bro. Steve pastored, we started several ministries, including a jail ministry which is still active today.
In the summer of 2003, Bro. Steve went back on the evangelical field, and we began seeking another pastor. In the fall of 2003, Bro. Shannon McDonald came and preached for us, and soon after became our new pastor. We saw God move and help us in so many ways. While Bro. Shannon was with us, we completely remodeled the church, built a new fellowship hall, and several classrooms.
Since August of 2007, Bro. Rick Simpson of Kentucky has been our pastor. He and his wife, Sis. Beverly have been a great blessing to our church. We have been blessed with wonderful men of God as our pastors---each with his own unique style and personality. God has blessed Summit, and we look forward to what God has for us in the future.
